Failed to load picture from file: reason: Failed to open file

This error message will be given if any of your images were not created in the correct format or they are not the recommended size or colour space. To ensure that your images are printed to our highest standards, it is crucial that they are saved and sized according to our recommended specifications.

File format

All your photos, whether taken with a digital camera, or scanned, or developed from film and delivered to you on a photo CD, must be saved in the jpeg file format and all photo files must end in .jpg or .jpeg.

If you are scanning photos, follow the directions below to save your photos as jpegs:

Scan the photo and select Save As from the File menu option

Select .jpg from Save As type drop down menu

Save to a directory on your hard drive or desktop

Image size

The size of the photos you need ultimately depends on the size you use them on the final printed page. Our BookMaker software programme will warn you if you have used a photo that has insufficient resolution for a size you have chosen.

In general, we recommend the following photo sizes as sufficient for the largest sized photos (one photo per page) in each of our products:

Paperback PocketBooks: 800 × 600 or greater

Classic Hardcover Books: 1200 × 900 or greater

Deluxe Hardcover Books: 2272 × 1704 or greater

1. Scanned Images
We recommend that you size the image to 305 mm x 406 mm at a resolution of 180 dpi. If you scan an image at a lower resolution than 180 dpi, it will not print sufficiently using our press even if the image appears fine on your monitor. (Your monitor displays images at a resolution of 72 dpi.)

2. Images from a Digital Camera

We recommend using photos taken with digital cameras that are greater than 2 mega-pixel and less than 7 mega-pixel. (Use a 5 mega-pixel digital camera for the best results.) Whatever camera you use, we recommend always using the highest quality setting. You can always reduce the size of the photo later, but you cannot increase the resolution of a photo shot on a lower setting.

NOTE: Photos taken with 7 mega-pixel or 8 mega-pixel digital cameras (or higher) will NOT reproduce well in our books unless they are downsized. We do not recommend you use these photos in the BookMaker software to create your book.

3. Square Images
The software requires that you maintain a 4 to 3 aspect ratio for your images. Square images that are placed into our image templates tend to distort in the printing. We recommend putting the square image into a photo editing program and create it with a border or background so that it maintains the 4 to 3 aspect ratio. Inserting this now rectangular .jpg image into our templates will be printed just fine as long as it fits the above recommended image settings.

Other important tips

Our press prints 175 lpi (lines per inch)

Use RGB or sRGB only when enhancing photos

Use RGB or sRGB for black and white photos also

Do not use CMYK, it will distort your images

Do not use vectors, layers, or slices

Our press does not recognise greyscale. You need to create the jpegs in RGB or sRGB

Our colour profile is closest to Adobe 98

Some of the images in your book are of lower than recommended quality. (These images have a red outline around them in the Book window.) Are you sure you want to proceed?

If the line is red, this photo is below our recommended print quality and needs to be adjusted. If this picture was not created at 180 dpi (resolution), we suggest you recreate this image and replace the old one with it. If this image cannot be recreated, the best way to make the picture print at a higher quality is to reduce the size of the image.

To locate the picture(s) with the red outline, follow the steps below:

Click on the Book button in the lower tool bar.

Click on the 1 Page view from the Preview tool bar located in the upper portion of the screen.

Use the Back key to go to the Cover Page template.

Use the Next button to flip through the pages of your book

Click on each image on all of the pages. There will be either a thin blue line or a thin red line around the images.

If the line is blue, click on the Next key to advance to the next page.

Look carefully at each picture on each page to determine if the line is blue or red.

To reduce the size of the image:

Click on the picture with the red outline, a tool bar will open up above the picture.

Click on the Zoom Out button until the outline of the image turns blue. Or, you can also hold down the Shift key on your keyboard and click on the Zoom Out button, which will reduce the image by greater increments. If the line does not turn back to blue until the image becomes very small in the template frame, we recommend that you do not use this photo in your book as it will print very small.

There are blank pages in your book that contain no photos or text.
Do you want to remove those pages from your book?

The message will occur if you do not create the 20-page minimum that is required to print a book or if you do not enter text into a text box or place a photo in any of the templates.

From the notification pop-up, you can:

Click "yes" to remove the blank pages and proceed with the purchase.

Click "no" to leave the blank pages and proceed with your purchase.

Click "cancel" to cancel this purchase.

NOTE: We do not recommend leaving the cover template empty. This will result in a blank page showing through the Picture Window and Peek-through Window covers or a blank Classic Label adhered to your cover.

To reformat your book to fill any blank pages:

Click on the Book mode

Click on the All Pages view from the Preview tool bar. You will see all of your pages and will see which pages or caption/photo boxes are blank.
